Kuznetsova Avenged Again
Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko advanced to the second round of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva, who are amid the Kremlin Cup’s favorites, progressed to the second round as well.
Nikolay Davydenko made the first step en route to the third successive title of the Kremlin Cup. His mood is resolute, judging by the yesterday’s battle with French Florent Serra. Although number five Davydenko wasn’t at his very best vs the Frenchman, he managed to prevail with the score of 6-1, 7-5 and change their personal 1-1 record to 2-1 in his favor. Davydenko next faces Guillermo Garcia Lopez of Spain.
In the women’s singles, Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova again avenged Li Na of China for the Olympic collapse. Kuznetsova crashed Li Na in Tokyo, at the Pan Pacific Open next month and ultimately prevailed in Moscow (6-4 7-5). The battle was nervous, and the Chinese won five games at Kuznetsova’s service during two sets, but the Russian responded by seven break-points.
Another Russian, Vera Zvonareva beat compatriot Maria Kirilenko to progress to the next round, where she will oppose Italy’s Francesca Schiavone. Meanwhile, U.S. Venus Williams shocked Moscow by losing to Italy's Flavia Pennetta in three sets of the first round.
