Moscow Spares No Diplomatic Efforts
Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin again urged Transdniestria's President Igor Smirnov to have a bilateral meeting. The place of the get-together is vital. Smirnov had rejected to head for Moldova and Voronin said he would go to Tiraspol to talk with the breakaway leader.
The story around Igor Smirnov’s refusal to meet with Vladimir Voronin because of the place choice gained momentum yesterday. Moldova’s Reintegration Minister Vasily Shova confirmed the desire of Chisinau to unconditionally continue the talks, specifying that President Voronin is ready to go to Transdniestria’s capital Tiraspol to hold the long-awaited negotiations there.
The statement caught off-guard Transdniestria’s leadership. Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador-at-Large Valery Nesterushkin is currently in Tiraspol, where he spares no efforts to arrange the meeting.
The get-together of Smirnov and Voronin is vital for Moscow, as it will be the overture to their meeting in Russia in presence of President Dmitry Medvedev. At that summit, the clashing leaders will be expected to ink a statement about adherence to principles of mutual sovereignty, territorial integrity and about elaborating parameters of Transdniestria’s legal status within Moldova.
The Kremlin needs this agreement by December summit of NATO’s foreign ministers, where the highlights will probably be the August clashes of Russia and Georgia and the decision on MAP for Tbilisi. So, Moscow will endeavor to demonstrate its peacekeeping success with the example of Transdniestria, specifying that it has been reached exclusively through the diplomatic efforts.
