Lavrov Goes to Poland to Deliberate
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov meets with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski and Prime Minister Donald Tusk today to deliberate on stationing the U.S. interceptors in Poland and on Polish response to Russia’s-Georgia’s clashes. Lavrov will attempt to persuade Polish leadership to soften its standing in respect of Russia, but the sources with the diplomatic community doubt the success of this undertaking. Poland stands for imposing tough sanctions of the EU on Russia.
Moscow intends to thoroughly promote relations with Poland, Lavrov announced prior to his Polish visit. Poland wouldn’t be the state with the worst relations with Russia, Donald Tusk said, inspiring certain optimism.

Regardless, Russia’s diplomats don’t conceal that the highlights of the negotiations will be the issues, where the opinions of Moscow and Warsaw differ to the greatest extent – stationing the U.S. interceptors in Poland and the latter’s response to the recent war in the Caucasus.

Warsaw and Washington agreed on the interceptors August 14, when the United States yielded to Tusk’s terms. After it, General Staff Deputy Chief Anatoly Nogovitsyn announced that Poland was the prior target for the attack of Russia’s Armed Forces.

Russia’s military confirmed their resolve yesterday. The RF Strategic Missile Force Commander General-Colonel Nikolay Solovtsev announced yesterday that Russia may aim some of its intercontinental missiles on the missile defense facilities in Poland. “Russia has no other way out but to take adequate steps of response in respect of the U.S. military facilities,” the official said.

The matters are equally clouded when it comes to the Caucasus war. Poland has been unambiguously backing up Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili from the first day of the clashes. Exactly Poland along with the Baltic States had called for the toughest sanctions against Russia on the eve of the extraordinary summit of the EU. The standing of Warsaw hasn’t changed, a source with Polish Foreign Minister said.
