Cell Retailer’s Office Searched
A search was conducted of the central offices of Euroset, Russia’s largest cellular retailer, yesterday by the Prosecutor General’s Office. Kommersant sources say the search may be connected to an audit of payments received through machines in Euroset outlets. Other retailers say the action will complicate rumored negotiations for the financially troubled company’s sale.
People in masks arrived at the company’s Moscow headquarters at 11:00 a.m. and prevented anyone except company employee from entering and prevented everyone from leaving. “The law enforcement representatives were looking for tax documentation and were interested in the location of Euroset retail sales manager for Moscow Marina Kucherenko, Euroset co-owner Evgeny Chichvarkin and general director of OOO Euroset Mos-1 Natalia Florovskaya,” the source said.

The prosecutor’s investigative committee has an open case against Euroset for the smuggling of cellular telephones. A representative of the committee stated yesterday that the search was not related to that case. Euroset co-owner Timur Artemyev said that he was not aware of the reason for yesterday’s search. Several representatives of the company’s competitors were also mystified by the prosecutor’s motivation.

A Euroset representative suggested that the search may have been related to technical difficulties with the automated payment system in Euroset stores. Payments made through those terminals between August 27 and September 1, several million rubles, were credited to clients’ accounts late. Artemyev said that the delays were due to technical problems related to the installation of new equipment and “could not attract the interest of law enforcement on that scale.”
