Russia Nears Britain in Medal Olympic Race
Russia won three gold medals yesterday. With 16 golds, we have neared Britain in the medal Olympic race, and given that the women’s handball team has advanced to the final, the third position of Russia in the medal table of the countries appears a realistic task. Reaching China (46 golds) or the United States (29) has been long out of the question.
The mere thought about the reprimand to be addressed to our sport chiefs but for the wrestlers of North Caucasus appears dreadful. Yesterday, Shirvani Muradov of Russia’s Dagestan beat Kazakhstan's Taimuraz Tigiyev in the 96kg freestyle match to increase to six the number of gold medals won in wrestling.

For Russia, the things have been no so bad in other kinds of sport recently. The Athens champion Andrei Moiseev defended the title in the modern pentathlon competition yesterday. After legendary Lars Hall of Sweden, Moiseev became the second pentathlon athlete of the last 52 years, who managed to win two Olympic Games in a row.

The speed of our walkers of Mordovia matches the strength of our North Caucasus wrestlers. Valery Borchin had won his gold at Beijing Olympics and yesterday was the turn of Olga Kaniskina. Similar to her countryman, Olga raced towards the finish line to triumph in the women's 20km walk of the athletics competition in the National Stadium August 21, 2008.

Russia has advanced to the final in the women’s handball to fight with Norway for gold. But the basketball squad yielded to the United States in the semifinal and bronze is the only medal to be claimed.
