Syrian President Supported Russia's Counterpart
RF President Dmitry Medvedev met with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad at the presidential residence Bocharov Ruchey outside Sochi August 21, 2008. Bashar al-Assad voiced his complete support for Russia’s standing in conflicts around Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Syria understands the essence of Russia’s position and its combat response to the events, perceiving it as response to the provocation of Georgia, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced, specifying that Syria opposes any attempts to blacken Russia and present its position in the wrong light. At the same time, Bashar al-Assaad approved of the decision of Russia’s leadership to set to pulling out of Georgia.
In addition to conflict in Georgia, the presidents deliberated on indirect talks of Syria and Israel and on deliveries of Russia’s armaments to Damascus.
“We will be ready to deliver to Syria the armaments that are, first of all, defensive and that will in no way disrupt the strategic balance in the region,” the RF Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared after the negotiations.
