Evraz Mine Collapsed in Kuznetsk Basin
One of the oldest mines of Kuznetsk Basin, mine No. 12 in Kiselevsk, collapsed yesterday, August 17, 2008, killing three miners. So far, the basic explanation is that the tragedy happened on violation of working technology. Kemerovo Region’s Governor Aman Tuleev promised the aid of 1 million ruble to families of killed miners.
The tragic collapse happened at 8:40 a.m. local time, it was the local catastrophe – ten of 70 miners were working in the pit when the sloughing began. Seven managed to climb out to the ground even before the arrival of rescuers but three didn’t survive and their bodies were lifted to the surface same Sunday.

The mine belongs to Russia’s metal giant Evraz Group that bought it in March of 2005. It is one of the oldest actively working mines of Kiselevsk with the annual production efficiency of 500,000 to 600,000 tons of coal. It was thoroughly upgraded in 1999 to 2001.

The tragedy is the fourth one recently happened in the mines of Kuznetsk Basin. Methanol explosion at Ulyanovskaya mine killed 110 in March of 2007, and 39 didn’t survive the accident in Yubileinaya mine that year’s May. A mine in Mezhdurechensk collapsed in May of this year, killing six miners. The better part of mines that suffered from accidents were equipped with all modern prevention devices.
