Russians Shoot Beside Gold
Russia’s team hasn’t won any gold at Beijing Olympics. Our athletes are only the 13th in the teams’ race. But the usual practice is that the Russians start winning medals at large closer to the end of Olympic Games.
The target for Beijing Olympics is from 30 medals to 35 medals. The absolute figures are of little importance, said Russian Olympic Committee President Leonid Tyagachev. “The vital thing is to win at least a medal more than China.”

But after two days of competitions, the task of catching up and outrunning China en route to Olympic triumph doesn’t appear attainable. China leads in the medal race, having won six gold medals already. As to Russia, we have only three silver medals and a bronze one.

It was Lyubov Galkina that brought the first medal to the team at Beijing Olympics. Galkina won silver in the air rifle shooting competition. Natalia Paderina also shot silver from the air pistol. Yulia Pakhalina and Anastasia Pozdnyakova won silver in three-meter women’s synchronized diving. Gold medalist of the Athens Olympics, Alexei Alipov was awarded the bronze in men's trap shooting yesterday.

The statistics of this Olympics could be hardly called inspiring. The Russians had a gold, four silver and two bronze medals after the two-day competitions in Athens.
