Kovtun Ready to Cooperate with Scotland Yard
Russia’s businessman Dmitry Kovtun said he would help Scotland Yard in investigating the radioactive poisoning death of former FSB agent Alexander Litvinenko.
”We are ready to cooperate with investigators, of course, but only under the Russian laws,” Dmitry Kovtun told Russia Today TV Channel.
Dmitry Kovtun met with business associate Andrey Lugovoy and former FSB agent Alexander Litvinenko at London’s Millennium Hotel November 1, 2006. Litvinenko fell ill the same day, he was admitted to hospital and died some time later. Poisoning by radioactive polonium 210 was said to be the reason of his death.
Britain’s detectives went to Russia past year to interrogate Kovtun and Lugovoy. Both men denied any involvement in Litvinenko’s murder.
Last week, ABC News shed light on some conclusions of Scotland Yard. The murder was said to have been masterminded by the Kremlin and committed by secret services of Russia. Britain's detectives were intending to file charges against Lugovoy.
Scotland Yard told Litvinenko’s widow that the suspects would hardly be put on trial and the case would be closed despite sufficient number of evidences collected, Britain’s media announced later. The thing is that, under Russia’s laws, a citizen of Russia cannot be extradited to another state.
