Moskovsky Komsomolets Gets Ready for Decaying Tower
Moscow Ostankino Tower faces early decay, Moskovsky Komsomolets daily signaled with reference to independent examination carried out following the death of constructor.
Past fall, Nikolay Nerkin, 54, was fatally wounded by a steel rope holding the concrete post of the tower. The constructor was extending the ropes when one of them broke to injure him to death.
Manufacturer’s defects in the roping attachment were the reason of the accident, concluded a special team of experts that investigated the details. The strength of a mounting stud proved much lower than specified in the certificate, scientists of Moscow Energy Institute told Moskovsky Komsomolets. The stud broke at 70 tons though it was to endure the 100-ton load. The experts took one more mounting part for examination only to find out that its metal was similar to the metal of the broken stud.
Alarmed by the results, Moscow Energy Institute recommended checking all parts, apparently to no avail. The probe into the accident hasn’t been completed yet, Deputy Senior Engineer of Ostankino Tower Vadim Oreshnikov said.
