Fatah, Hamas to Attempt to Agree in Mecca
Feuding Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah, have agreed to resume peace talks in Islam's holy city of Mecca in response to proposal voiced by Saudi King Abdullah, Reuters reported.
The Hamas government said it accepted the invitation of Saudi king, and Fatah also promised to go to Mecca for negotiations, which date hasn’t been fixed so far.
The ruling Islamist Hamas announced on Friday the end of the talks targeted at creating a coalition government of national unity in Palestinian Autonomy. The reason was the bloody clashes of two movements, which killed more than 60 from December 2006.
On Sunday, Hamas-controlled militants kidnapped Brigadier General Sayyed Shabban, chief of National Security Forces in central Gaza. Shabban is said to be the highest ranked Palestinian abducted during the standoff of Fatah and Hamas.
The clashes of Hamas and Fatah aggravated in December once Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for early parliamentary elections, which was viewed as the attempted coup d’etat by Hamas.
