Saint Petersburg Submarine Takes the Sea
Russia’s newest submarine – Saint Petersburg – will soon take the sea for the first time, Interfax reported.
During its first voyage, the submarine of Project 677 will perform a number of targets set forth in the builders’ program of tests to check the possible duration of its underwater staying, the maximum underwater velocity and to measure its noise performance in different conditions.

Taking the sea will complete the builders’ trials. The submarine will face state tests in spring or in summer and pass on to Russia’s Navy in the next move.

The Saint Petersburg submarine was set afloat in 2005. Two more submarines of Project 677 – Kronshtadt and Sevastopol – are being constructed now to pass into service in 2008 to 2010. The combat capacity of the Project 677 submarines improved several fold vs. the diesel submarines of earlier design.
