Saddam’s Closest Mates Executed
The closest mates of the executed dictator of Iraq Saddam Hussein - Awad Hamed al-Bandar, former head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, and Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief, – were hanged before Monday dawn, Prosecutor Munqith al-Faroon announced as quoted by Associated Press.
Al-Faroon said the government called on him to send a judge to witness the execution. The hanging is said to have occurred in the former intelligence headquarters, where Hussein had been executed 16 days ago.
According to the lawyers of the executed, they were to have been hanged along with the late dictator but the authorities shelved the execution at the supreme moment. The delay displeased Al-Bandar, who would rather be hanged together with Hussein, while Barzan Ibrahim never stopped mourning the death of his brother.
Last week, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani addressed the government to delay the execution to get a better view of the situation.
On November 5, 2006, Saddam Hussein, Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar were found guilty in the crimes against humanity and condemned to execution for involvement in the killing of 148 Shiite Muslims in the village of Dujail in the waked of the assassination attempt on the former dictator in 1982.
