Name of Orderer of Kozlov’s Killing Announced
Alexey Frenkel, former board chairman at VIP Bank, was detained on suspected arrangement of the murder of Andrey Kozlov, first deputy chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, Frenkel’s lawyer Igor Trunov told RBC.
So far, Alexey Frenkel has been detained just as a suspect. Basmanny Court of Moscow will decide on his confinement under guard on March 12. The trial is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m., MSK.
Trunkov said he was very much surprised by Frenkel’s arrest. Frenkel was being interrogated “all previous night,” the lawyer said, pointing out he hasn’t met the client, so the position in defense hasn’t been shaped yet. Nevertheless, Trunov announced he will stand for the innocence of his client, “as it is absolutely unclear for what reasons he has been detained.”
Yesterday, Russia’s Prosecutor General Office announced that a person, who had ordered Andrey Kozlov’s assassination, was arrested at night from January 10 to 11. But the name of the suspect was kept secret.
Actual killers of Kozlov were detained past October, and intermediaries were caught in November to December of 2006. Therefore, seven persons have been detained under the case already, including the mastermind of the crime.
Alexey Frenkel is said to own a chain of small banks, which were used for laundering. Board chairman at Diamant Bank from 1995, he took over the board of VIP Bank afterwards. The license of VIP Bank was revoked June 16, 2006 on continuous violations of the banking laws of Russia.
The late first deputy chairman of the Central Bank of Russia, Andrey Kozlov was killed September 13, 2006. The top-ranked banker was shot when leaving Spartak Stadium, where the CBR employees had played football. Kozlov was taken to hospital, where he died without regaining consciousness.
