Russia’s Embassy in Baghdad Twice Under Fire Jan 10
Russia’s Embassy in Baghdad was twice under small-arms fire January 10, according to the official web-site of the foreign policy authority of Russia.
Even though the shooting led to no victims, the building was materially damaged, and Russia reacted to the incident in no time. The RF Foreign Ministry summoned up Iraq’s Ambassador to Moscow and the Temporarily Charge D’Affaires of the United States.
In the wake of the attacks, Russia demanded from Iraq’s authorities to immediately take all actions needed to improve physical protection of the diplomatic mission, for which security the authorities are liable under the Vienna Convention for Diplomatic Relations. Russia also called on Iraq to endeavor best efforts to prevent repetition of similar incidents.
A spokesman of the U.S. Embassy was told that, under the mandate of the UN Security Council, the U.S.-led Multinational Force in Iraq is directly responsible for ensuring safety of the diplomatic corps there.
