Russia’s Sailors Go on Strike in Iraq’s Port
Russia’s sailors of Frigate dry-cargo vessel went on strike Thursday in the Um-Kasr port of Iraq.
The sailors went on strike as the vessel’s operator – some Russian firm from Nakhodka – refused to settle wage arrears of many months.
The sailors stopped unloading the vessel and promised to resume the work no sooner than they got the money due for the last three months of the past year, said the chairman of the Far Eastern Regional Branch of Russia’s Sailors Trade Union.
In response to the crew’s demand to pay the debt, the operator decided “to strip sailors of wages due for the previous months because of the loss of the staircases in the stormy weather,” the trade union’s chairman specified.
The Saint Vincent flag vessel that is in the Um-Kasr port has 12 crew members on board; all of them are the residents of Russia.
