Angela Merkel to Oppose Ambitions of Russia, Iran
When interviewed by The Times, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel said she would attempt to improve relations of the EU with the United States and oppose ambitions of Russia in time of the six-month presidency of Germany in the EU that started January 1, 2007.
When it comes to opposing Russia’s ambitions, Merkel said she would have to prove that the gas pipeline project via the bottom of the Baltic Sea wasn’t targeted against Poland. Another intention of Germany, the chancellor specified, was to bring momentum to the Middle East quartet of the United States, EU, UN and Russia in an effort to put into motion peaceful negotiations of Israel and Palestine.

As the EU chairperson, Merkel vowed to endeavor to deter ambitious plans of Iran in the Persian Gulf. At the same time, the chancellor acknowledged that she was rather perplexed to learn about the possible intention of Israel to destroy nuclear facilities in Iran by military action.

When it comes to the internal policy of Europe, creation of the EU constitution was of prime importance, the chancellor said. Europe of 27 states will evidently function differently from the time when it had just 15 members, Merkel made clear, hinting, perhaps, on Romania and Bulgaria, which joined the EU January 1, 2007 and where the living standards are materially lower than in other states of the EU.
