Georgian-Abkhazian Checkpoint Fired On
As the result of gunfire at a checkpoint on the border of Georgia and Abkhazia, one member of a Georgian Interior Ministry subunit was killed and another injured, News Georgia news agency reports, citing deputy head of the Gal District administration in Georgia Georgy Lomia.
Lomia said that the attack was carried out by “Abkhazian special forces” at about 6:00 a.m. A grenade launcher was used in the attack. Chief of the Gal District police Otar Turnanba and chief of the police subdivision in lower Gal Alik Khishba were recently killed in Gal District in a separate incident that Gal District officials claimed was related.
Lomia said that the Georgian government had warned local residents about the possibility of attack a day in advance and most of the population of the district had left their villages and taken shelter in the forest at the time the attack occurred.
