U.S. Imposes New Sanctions on Russian Companies
The Bush administration announced new sanctions against three Russian companies, Rosoboronexport, the Tula Instrument Design Bureau and the Kolomna Heavy Equipment Design Bureau. The sanctions will last two years. Chinese and North Korean companies were subjected to sanctions at the same time. All of the companies are accused of selling arms to Iran, Syria or Venezuela. The Russian companies have yet to receive official notification of the sanctions.
In 2006, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Rosoboronexport and Sukhoi for violations of a 2000 U.S. law prohibiting arms sales to Iran, accusing the companies of providing that country with material for the manufacture of weapons of mass destruction. Rosoboronexport and the Russian Foreign Ministry sharply protested the sanctions.
The U.S. lifted sanctions against Sukhoi before the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President George W. Bush last November, but left sanctions against Rosoboronexport in place.
The State Department warned at that time that it would watch the activities of those Russian companies carefully.
