U.S. Freezes Syrian Bank Accounts
The U.S. Treasury Department has frozen the assets located in American banks of three Syrian scientific institutes due to suspicions of distributing weapons of mass destruction. The organizations involved are the Higher Institute of Applied Sciences, the Institute of Electronics and National Standards and Calibration Laboratory, all of which are divisions of the Syrian Center for Scientific Research, which is the object of the weapons suspicions.
U.S. Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Stuart Levey stated that Syria is using government organizations to develop weapons and missiles. “We will continue to take measures to prevent producers of weapons of mass destruction that are sponsored on the state level from using the international financial system.”
