U.S. Frustrated by Progress in Talks with N. Korea
No progress has been attained at the six-party talks on the nuclear program of North Korea, chief negotiator of the United States said as quoted by Associated Press Friday.
Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill said he knows nothing that could be interpreted as a sign of any progress. The negotiator expressed his views early on Friday, i.e. on the last day of the talks.
North Korea doesn’t treat the discussed issues seriously, always changing the topics, evading the claims and sheltering itself behind counter reproaches, Hill made clear.
The six-party talks of the United States, North Korea, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia, opened in Beijing December 18. North Korea began by the ultimatum demanding to lift previous restrictions and to help construct a nuclear reactor designated for peaceful use. North Korea also indicated that it is a nuclear nation, must be acknowledged in this capacity and will negotiate only the disarmament issues. The intention of other negotiators was to persuade North Korea to abandon the nuclear program.
