Russia Set Medal Target for 2008 Olympic Games
Russia’s Olympic Committee (ROC) counts on at least the third result in the medal race of the national teams at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The stake is on the kinds of sport where the Russians are traditionally victorious, said ROC Vice President Vladimir Vasin.
”We should focus on our kinds of sport, where we are strong traditionally,” Vasin emphasized. “The results of Russia’s team at 2004 Games and World Championships of 2005 and 2006 keep alive the chances for successful performance in Beijing.”

The official also specified the kinds of sport where the chances of Russia are rather slim. They are the men’s basketball and baseball, women’s grass hockey, equestrian, badminton, table tennis and triathlon. Both the men’s and women’s football teams failed to advance to Beijing Games, Vasin reminded.

Russia was the third in the teams’ race of Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games. It won 27 gold medals, having lost to the United States (36) and China (32).
