Discovery Astronauts Made 2nd Spacewalk
Discovery astronauts made the second of three spacewalks Thursday, AFP reported referring to NASA. The third outing timed to Discovery’s stay at the International Space Station (ISS) is slated for Saturday.
The spacewalk of astronauts Robert Curbeam and Christer Fuglesang lasted for five hours. The key concern of the pair was to proceed with the power rewiring of ISS to connect a new solar array that will double the power output of the station.
The spacewalking astronauts finished the rewiring job on ISS an hour ahead of the schedule. To avoid the electric shock, the station was producing only a half of the usual output.
The power rewiring is to be finished in time of the third spacewalk that is slated for Saturday. On that day, Curbeam will be accompanied by Sunita Williams.
The gradual construction of ISS that had been suspended on crush of Columbia in 2003 was resumed in September over Atlantis mission. The target is to finally shape the station by 2010, when NASA plans to stop launching the shuttles.
