Maskaev to Box Klitschko in Moscow, Promoter Promised
The boxing match between WBC champ Oleg Maskaev of Russia and IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko may happen in Moscow April 21, said Dennis Rappaport, who is Maskaev’s promoter.
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has all reasons to permit Maskaev to fight Klitschko before the match against the compulsory challenger, Maskaev’s promoter told boxingtalk.com. The challenger will be determined January 6, 2007 in the return match of Nigeria’s Samuel Peter and James Toney of the United States.
What could be better for boxing? To have a single champ respected by all, Rappaport emphasized, adding it will be a big fight [Maskaev vs. Klitschko] with the winner pledging to meet either Peter or Toney. Any of them will earn still greater money, the promoter specified.
If the match happens, HBO will broadcast it, Rappaport made clear. The plans are to hold the match April 21 and the probability that it happens in Moscow is very high.
Maskaev retained his WBC heavyweight crown in fight against his challenger Uganda's Peter Okhello in Moscow December 10, 2006. After that match, the arrangers said Maskaev would soon fight IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko, but Klitschko denied it as rumors. At the same time, before the interview to boxingtalk.com, Rappaport had never promised the Moscow match of Maskaev and Klitschko.
