Putin Willing to Extend Tenure of St. Petersburg Governor
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin nominated St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko to be approved for another term, rbc.ru reported. The City’s Assembly will focus on the issue December 20, 2006.
It was St. Petersburg Assembly’s Speaker Vadim Tyulpanov that read the president’s address to the deputies, who are expected to focus on extending Matvienko’s authority at December 20 sitting.
Valentina Matvienko voiced the intention to remain governor for another term when she was meeting reporters in Smolny Palace December 6. The governor said the extension was initiated by President’s Envoy to North-West District Ilya Klebanov. The reasons were that St. Petersburg should have stable power in time of forthcoming elections to the Assembly, State Duma and presidential elections.
Matvienko was elected the city’s governor in October 2003, so her four-year tenure expires October 2007. She had served as the president’s envoy to the North-West District from March 11, 2003 and till the day when she took over St. Petersburg.
