Russia, U.S. Praised Iran’s Draft of Europe
Envoys of the United States and Russia have praised the revised draft on Iran’s nuclear program that Britain, France and Germany presented to the Security Council.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised the revised draft and hoped for soon adoption of the document, but didn’t specify the voting dates, France Presse reported Tuesday.
The draft reflects Russia’s approach and Russia’s philosophy in part that it shouldn’t be of punitive nature, said Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations. But Churkin opposed freezing assets and imposing travel ban on the firms and individuals linked to Iran’s nuclear program.
The deliberations shouldn’t take much time and might be completed by Christmas, Churkin told Reuters, meaning, however, Russia’s Christmas (January 7), not the European one.
Meanwhile, China’s ambassador to the U.N. called humiliating the travel ban on bureaucrats of Iran.
The draft resolution has been discussed by six states endeavoring to settle the nuclear problem of Iran – the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany. Russia and China challenged the previous draft for too tough provisions, while the envoys of United States lambasted it for insufficient actions.
