Israel Is Nuclear Nation, Olmert Hints
Israel has nuclear weapons, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel hinted. “Iran openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map. Can you say this is the same level, when they are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as America, France, Israel, Russia?” Olmert said in the interview to German TV station that was aired on Monday.
Olmert’s office released contradiction in no time, saying the statement of prime minister was misinterpreted and taken out of context. The actual meaning was that, in contrast to Iran, the four states are committed to democracy.
Nevertheless, a few prominent policy makers of Israel lashed out at their PM for unguarded remarks, extending their rhetoric to calling on him to resign. So far, Israel has never officially confirmed it is a nuclear nation. The experts think Israel has from 200 to 300 nuclear warheads and exactly this possession makes other states of the region, first of all Iran, strive for the access to nuclear technology of dual use.
