Annan Critical of the U.S. Foreign Policy in Farewell Speech
In his last major speech as the U.N. secretary general, Kofi Annan criticized foreign policy of the U.S. administration.
In his farewell speech, Annan faulted the United States for human rights and law violations in the countries, on which soil the Americans are fighting terrorism.
Annan said human rights and the reign of law are essential for global security and well-being. If the Unites States breaches its own ideals, their friends all over the world feel embarrassed, the U.N. secretary general made clear.
Annan, who leaves the office of the U.N. secretary general December 31, 2006, will be succeeded by Ban Ki-Moon, the former foreign minister of South Korea.
