Moscow Government Accuses Kommersant of Libel
The press service of the Moscow government has called a lie Kommersant’s statement about city authorities not executing a ruling of the Russian Supreme Court of Arbitration.
ST Development won a tender to rebuild the Rossia hotel in late 2004. The company has already started demolishing the hotel. Following an application by the Monab company, the Supreme Court of Arbitration invalidated results of the contest on October 24. Shortly afterwards, Moscow Vice Mayor Iosif Ordzhonikidze said ST Development would continue its works to reconstruct Rossia and no tender would be convened to find a substitute. The argument in Kommersant’s article was based on the words of the city official.
“This statement is a distortion of the position of the Moscow government,” city authorities said in a press release on Friday.
The press release underscores that the ruling of the Supreme Court of Arbitration invalidating the result of the contest does not repudiate the investment contract to rebuild the hotel.
Moscow’s government has demanded that Kommersant apologize for libel and threatened with legal actions against the newspaper.
