Georgian Parliament Hesitant to Withdraw from CIS
Deputy speaker of the Georgian parliament Mikhail Machavariani stated today that the majority in the Georgian parliament would not support the initiative of the opposition Democratic Front to withdraw the country from the CIS, the Novosti-Gruzia news agency reports. Machavariani noted that, although there are a number of documents in which the desire to leave the CIS has been codified, economic impediments exist inasmuch as the public would be negatively affected by the move.
“For example,” Machavariani said, “food coming from Ukraine would cost at least 12 percent more if Georgia withdraws from the CIS. That would be much more difficult for the Georgian public than the Russian blockade.”

The Democratic Front initiative was considered today by the parliament's bureau. It is not the first time the country's departure from the post-Soviet organization has been discussed. A government commission was formed in May under the leadership of Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli to study the issue.
