Borat Sagdiev U.S. Box Office Topper
The biggest moneymaker in American movie theaters this weekend was the scandalous Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, according to the Associated Press. Borat, with British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role, pulled in $26.4 million. It was followed by The Santa Clause 3: Escape Clause with $20 million and the animated Flushed Away at $19.1 million.
The success of Borat is somewhat unexpected. A week before the film's premiere, 20th Century Fox reduced the number of premiere copies of the film from 2200 to 800 after market research found that many people are unfamiliar with the British comic, who is seen frequently on MTV.

Cohen plays a Kazakh television journalist in the film, which was shot in various locations in the United States with a “candid camera” format. The politically incorrect nature of the humor has led to a storm of protest from human rights organizations and the government of Kazakhstan.

Cohen, a Cambridge graduate with extensive television experience, can also be seen in the current film Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
