Russia Lost $8 Billion Because of Gastarbeiters
The economic damage suffered by Russia due to nonpayment of taxes by illegal migrants has exceeded $8 billion, Russia’s Federal Migration Service Chief Konstantin Romodanovsky told the U.N. forum dedicated to migration.
The CIS migrants annually export from Russia more than $10 billion bypassing the state supervisory bodies. At the same time, the registered money transfer by the migrants was just a bit above $3 billion in 2005.
Russia views illegal migration as the threat to national security, Romodanovsky pointed out.
Russia has about 10 million illegal migrants now, Romodanovsky said, most of them are the residents of states emerged on collapse of the Soviet Union.
Quite a few analysts think the Federal Migration Service tends to overestimate the number of illegal migrants. But even they suppose there are 1 million to 1.5 million of them only in Moscow today.
