Russian Jet Crashes in Ukraine Killing 170 People Aboard
Russia’s Tu-154 crashed on a flight from Anapa to St. Petersburgwith 160 passengers and 10 crew members aboard on Tuesday, the RBC news agency reported. All passengers and crew died, according to early reports.
The Russian Emergency Ministry said the Pulkovo Airlines plane sent a SOS signal at 3.37 pm, Moscow time, while flying over Ukraine’s territory. At 3.39 pm, the jet was lost from radar contact. The debris was later found outside the village of Novgorodskoye, 45 kilometers from Donetsk, eastern Ukraine.

Police have cordoned off the crash site. 30 bodies have been recovered from the debris so far. The operation is impeded by a fire that flared on the site after the crash.

Early reports say that the Tu-154 crashed after it entered a zone of severe turbulence.

Russian President Vladimir Putin request Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov to set up a state commission to investigate the causes of the crash.
