Georgia to Stay in CIS for a While
Georgian government has denied the support to oppositional Democratic Front faction of the parliament, which spearheaded the withdrawal from CIS in late past year, Gazeta reports.
The government has considered the proposal in political, economic and social aspects and unambiguously resolved not to raise the question of withdrawal at today’s stage, said Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Levan Choladze.
It is worth mentioning that the Democratic Front was upheld by parliament’s speaker Nino Burjanadze in this undertaking. The speaker pointed to certain risks, including the growth in gas prices and political provocations, which the withdrawal is bound to entail and said they are to be ready to fight through the hardships.
Georgia is going though a severe energy crisis, which hit the country in the wake of explosion of a gas pipeline in North Ossetia.
