A Spy of Estonia Detained in St. Petersburg
An employee of a military shipbuilding enterprise has been detained on suspicion of spying, Interfax reports. The detained is said to have transferred confidential documents to Estonian intelligence.
Past September, a parcel with secret drawings inside was spotted in a bus during the probe on Russia’s-Estonian border. The bus was en route from St. Petersburg to Tallinn, Federal Security Service of Russia said. The trace led to a Russian officer with the access to those documents, who was arrested in late December.
The detained, whose nick name is Zaitsev, appeared to have passed defense documents to Estonian intelligence for a number of years, Fontanka.ru reports referring to the acknowledging testimony made by Zaitsev. The promised reward was assistance in moving to Estonia for permanent settlement and accelerated admittance to citizenship.
The intercepted documents contain 45 pages of drawings related to a war ship design.
Zaitsev could have been hooked by a former Soviet officer, who had been working for Estonian secret services since the USSR collapse.
