Ukraine Needs No Gas of Russia in 2006
Ukraine won't be buying Russia's gas via RosUkrEnergo in 2006, Andrey Lopushansky, deputy board chairman at Ukraine's Naftogaz, said as quoted by Echo of Moscow.
According to Lopushansky, Ukraine needs no gas of Russia and intends to purchase only the Central Asia's gas via RosUkrEnergo this year.
Before January 16, Ukraine will put forward its own draft of intergovernmental agreement with Russia concerning this year's deliveries of gas, Ukrainian PM Yury Yekhanurov vowed. Russia's-Ukrainian venture that is to be set up by this February 1 will be getting gas directly on border, Yekhanurov said. Ukraine will invest in the venture and appoint its leader, the PM specified.
Some time earlier, however, Ukrainian officials mentioned 16.5 billion cubic meters of gas to be delivered by Russia this year, while the overall gas supply was estimated at 76.5 billion cubic meters, including 40 billion provided by Turkmenistan and 20 billion produced in Ukraine.
Yekhanurov first spoke of Ukrainian desire to enter into a gas agreement with Turkmenistan up to 2031 in late December, when a bruising pricing dispute with Moscow was just escalating. But Ukraine saw no Turkmen gas January 1, 2006, when Gazprom curtailed gas supply to Europe by Ukrainian share.
