EU Pleased with Outcome
EU commissioners have hailed gas agreement reached by Russia and Ukraine and expressed satisfaction that the parties proved attentive to the calls of EU to expediently resolve the conflict, which could have threatened the shipment of Russia's gas to Europe.
On Wednesday, the European Commission released a joint statement sealed by Austrian Economics Minister Martin Bartenstein (Austria chairs the EU from January 1) and Energy and Foreign Ties Commissioners Andris Piebalgs and Benita Ferrero-Waldner. In the statement, the top-ranked officials of Europe have pointed to the prompt and positive reaction of Moscow and Kiev to the calls of Brussels, emphasizing the responsible attitude of both parties towards their mission of long term suppliers of gas to the EU countries.

No one has hoped for such prompt settlement of the conflict, Bartenstein told the reporters, adding it was a good start for Austria's chairmanship.
