Nissan Wants to Assemble Cars in Russia
May 24, Following Toyota and Volkswagen, Nissan Company is considering car production in Russia. A delegation of the Japanese Automobile Concern is to visit Gorkovsky (GAZ) and Ulyanovsky (UAZ) Automobile Plants as well as Zavolzhsky Engine Plant, Vedomosty reports.
Press secretary of the President’s Plenipotentiary in Privolzhye Federal District Sergey Novikov specified that the Japanese delegation would be headed by Patrick Pelata, Nissan Vice-President in charge of European operations. According to the newspaper, the organizer of the visit, Nizhny Novgorod Japanese Center (representing interests of Japanese companies in the region), declared official aim of the visit as “possible creation of a joint enterprise producing Japanese automobiles.”

Nissan Motors PR manager in Russia Tatyana Natarova confirmed the information on the future visit, however, she refused to comment on the possible Nissan cars production in Russia.

Deputy Head of RF Ministry of Industry and Science Engineering Department Aleksey Serezhenkin has no doubts that Nissan decided to take a closer look at the opportunity of car manufacture in Russia. Though, he says, so far there have been no requests from the Japanese concern to the Federal Government.

“The visit is going to be exploratory,” Head of the Technology Committee of Russian Car Producers Union Igor Korovkin surmises. He believes that if Nissan decides to invest into Russia it will have to choose from two options, either a joint company with a Russian car manufacturer, or building its own plant. However, Korovkin has not heard of Nissan searching a site for construction of a new plant.
