Manuscript of Pushkins Poem In the Georgian Hills Will Return to Russia
A manuscript of Pushkins poem In the Georgian Hills from Countess Karolina Sobanskayas salon album will be handed over to the Institute of Russian Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences/Pushkin House on the day celebrating the 205th anniversary of the great Russian poets birth.
The Institutes director, Nikolai Skatov, told an ITAR-TASS correspondent today that Vneshtorgbank acquired the priceless literary relic in France from private collectors Andrei and Vladimir Gofman.
The original owners of the rarity were proposing to put it up for auction. However, the bank arranged to buy it with the purpose of returning it to Russia. The amount of the transaction has not been disclosed.
The manuscript is of enormous historical and cultural value and will add to the unique collection of artifacts for which Pushkin House is renowned. The museum has more than 12 000 manuscripts by the Russian literary genius alone.
Each of them is a supreme national treasure, and even to talk about their monetary value is unethical, Nikolai Skatov said.
