Iraq's Volgas Go Without Repairs
GAZ's management has decided not to send specialists to Iraq to service the 5000 cars delivered to the country.Baghdad taxis are now left without qualified service.
The Volgas were sold to Iraq under a contract for 44 million euros signed in 2001.They are used by the Baghdad taxi fleet. In addition to delivery of the cars, the contract also made provision for the opening of a service center. However, due to rising tensions in Iraq and increasingly frequent seizures of foreign hostages, this contract clause is under threat of breaking down. GAZ sees increasing the number of factory-rained Iraqi specialists as a way out of the situation.
We note that an armed attack was carried out on Russian specialists in Baghdad today. One Russian was killed and two were taken hostage.
Three employees of the Russian company Interenergoservis were returning from work at a power plant located south of Baghdad when they were attacked by unknown assailants, who killed one and took the other two hostage. Aleksandr Yakovenko, an official spokesman for the RF Ministry of Foreign Affairs, declared that Russia is taking all necessary measures to free its citizens.
