Yelena Isinbaeva, Maria Sharapova Nominated to Sports Oscar
Russia’s Yelena Isinbaeva, winner of the Olympic pole vault and Maria Sharapova, winner of Wimbledon, have been nominated to the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, according to Laureus.com web-site. Svetlana Kuznetsova was nominated in the Laureus World Newcomer of the Year category.
Apart from Sharapova and Isinbaeva, the nominee list for the Laurents World Sportswoman of the Year includes Britain’s Kelly Holmes, winner of the 800-meter and 1,500-meter gold medals in Athens, Sweden's Carolina Kluft, winner of the heptathlon gold, and Holland's Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel, the most successful cyclist in Olympic Games, Sweden's golfing great Annika Sorenstam, current Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year.
The nominee list for the Laurents World Sportsman of the Year includes American Lance Armstrong, winner of a record sixth successive Tour de France in 2004, Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj, the first man in 80 years to win both the 1,500 meters and the 5,000 meters in Athens, Switzerland's world tennis No.1 Roger Federer, winner of three Grand Slam tennis events in 2004, Michael Phelps with his six swimming gold medals and one of the greatest Olympic performances of all time in Athens, Italy’s Valentino Rossi, winner of his fourth World MotoGP Championship, Germany’s Michael Schumacher, winner of his seventh Formula One World Championship.
Nominated for Laureus World Team of the Year are the Argentina Men's Olympic Basketball Team, conquerors of the United States 'dream team' and winners of the gold medal in Athens. Also shortlisted are Boston Red Sox, winners of the baseball World Series for the first time in 86 years, the European Ryder Cup Team, Portugal's FC Porto, winner of football's European Champions League, Ferrari, winners of their sixth consecutive Formula One Constructors World Championship, and Greece, who won the 2004 European Football Championship.
Annika Sorenstam is the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year 2003, Michael Schumacher is the Laureus World Sportman of that year. 2004 winners will be announced in Estoril, Portugal, May 14-16.
