Moscow ahead of Russia
Moscow government’s tourism committee unveiled the data on foreign tourists visited Moscow. Russia's capital appeared to have hosted more international guests than the whole country last year.
2.919 million foreigners toured Moscow in 2004, 17 percent up on year, when it hosted 2.488 million. The city’s tourism acceleration program is aimed at receiving 5 million international guests on year by 2010. This number is “real and executable”, said Grigory Antyufeev, head of the tourism committee, when commenting on the aforesaid data. Curiously, but Moscow authorities were for the first time well ahead of the State Statistics Committee in their annual calculations. According to the statistics service, the overall number of foreign tourists coming to Russia, including Moscow, in 2004 stood at 2.861 million, i.e. 58,000 people below the Moscow estimate made out separately for the city. Even more surprising is that both the State Statistics Committee and Moscow tourism authorities claim the figures are based on one and the same source, i.e. the Federal Frontier Service of the RF Federal Security Service.
