Estonia to Reconsider the History of Relations with Russia
October 19, Estonia authorities are set to struggle against hostile and false information about Estonia and the country's modern history, Vremya Novostey reports.
According to Estonian Minister of Population Paul-Eerik Rummo, the negative image of the country is created mostly by Russia. In his words, the Russian MID does not find it should apologize for the occupation, “spreading false information that joining the USSR in 1940 was voluntary of Estonia.”
At the same time, Rummo believes that some international organizations present Estonians as a people sympathizing with nazism, and Estonia as a pro-fascist state discriminating other ethnicities.
The newspaper reminds that in early September Estonian authorities decided to dismantle a memorial in Lihula to Estonians who fought on the German side and even served in the SS. However, this measure echoed in a wave of defacements of memorials to the Soviet soldiers of WW2. The last such incident took place on Friday in Valga town. In response, Estonia anti-fascist committee has called for a protest rally througout the country.
In his turn, Russian Ambassador in Estonia declared Russia would continue discussing the problem of the Russian-speaking population in Estonia both with EU and other organizations. This is not an information war, this is our fundamental policy,” the ambassador said. The problem is not the naturalization rate, but the “fact that Russians feel they're outcasts in Estonia.”
