Canadian Premier Comes to Putin to Talk about Oil and Gas
October 11, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin arrived in Moscow today for a three-day visit on the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. The two heads will negotiate cooperation in the sphere of raw materials.
Beside the meeting with president Putin, Canadian PM is to hold talks with the Russian premier Mikhail Fradkov, attend a round table with the two countries’ businessmen and talk with Russian political scientists.
According to Mr. Martin, his first visit to Russia is aimed at “strengthening global security cooperation, new impulse for trade exchange, and expanding “northern dimension” of Canadian-Russian relationship.”
The main topic of the talks will be supplying Russian oil and gas to Canada, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to a top-level Canadian diplomat. Thus, Canadian Petro-Canada and Gazprom are considering a possible construction of gas pipeline from the Barents Sea to Toronto, the source told the agency.
