Russian Railway to Open New Moscow-Tehran Route.
April 7, President of OAO Russian Railways (RZD) Gennady Fadeev and Iran Transport Minister Ahmad Khoram agreed upon resumption of Moscow-Tehran railway line .
Gennady Fadeev said in his interview with RIA Novosti, that the terms of the construction had not yet been determined because the issue needed to be coordinated with Azerbaijan, through which territory the railway is to be built. According to Mr. Fadeev, tripartite negotiations on this issue will take place in the nearest future.
The project’s estimated cost is $177 million. Gennady Fadeev did not mention the repayment period and the expected traffic-flow.
Railway communication between Tehran and Moscow existed yet in 1940-1950s, however it was cancelled due to development of air transport as well as worsening of Soviet-Iranian relations and traffic-flow reduction in this direction.
