Lithuanian Parliament Impeaches Rolandas Paksas
April 6, Lithuania’s parliament voted in favor of the impeachment of the country’s president Rolandas Paksas Tuesday, Reuters reports.
The decision to vote on impeachment was taken after the Constitutional Court of Lithuania had returned Rolandas Paksas guilty in high treason.
Parliamentarians dismissed Paskas for violating the constitution by granting citizenship to Jurijus Borisovas, a Russian businessman, who financed his election campaign. They also voted on the accusation that Paksas had leaked classified information to Borisovas by tipping him off that he was under surveillance and on the charge that he used his position to meddle in private business, Reuters reports.
Earlier and in his speech to the parliament, Paksas consistently denied any wrongdoing, saying the impeachment process was a plot against him. The affair has rocked Lithuania - a former Soviet republic, which last week became a NATO member and is set to join the European Union next month.
