German Gref: Khodorkovsky’s Arrest is No Mistake
March 31, Russian Minister of Economic Development and Trade (MERT) German Gref declared that Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s case was no result of “economic mistake” , while speaking at the opening of “Day of the Russian Economy – 2002” in Frankfurt am Main.
Head of MERT, who arrived to Frankfurt am Main expressly to take part in a business conference on Russia’s economy, told the journalists that the conflict between big business and “strong power” led by Putin was inevitable.
Russia’s leadership, according to the minister, had to prove sooner or later that “one cannot flout the law using the methods of early or mid 90s e.g. using money”. Moreover, German Gref assured that even before any arrests among NK YUKOS’ top managers ever started, the power had given “numerous signals” to the big business warning of “the need to observe rules of the game”. However, Mr. Gref complained, these signals “had not been understood”.
