Putin Urges to Vote in His Television Address
March 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin appears on Television with his address to Russians. The following is the full text of his address.
Dear citizens of Russia!

Dear Friends!

Next Sunday, on March 14, presidential elections will be held in Russia. It is my duty as the acting head of state to speak to you and to remind you of the importance of the coming event. Direct elections are one of the main accomplishments of democracy, and the results of the elections will have direct impact on Russia’s development.

Democratic procedures of the formation of state bodies are becoming habitual, but this should not reduce their significance in public opinion. Try to imagine just for a second what will happen to a country, in which the key governing bodies have not been formed. This is why every vote counts.

I must stress that it is only the support of the people that will make it possible to outline the course of the country’s development for years to come, to make important steps for boosting economic development and improving living standards of the population. It is your support, and it alone, that will make the next president sure of his abilities. Participation in the elections is the unique right to influence the developments in one’s own Fatherland.

There are no intermediate figures between the electors and presidential candidates. In accordance with the Constitution, Russian citizens personally elect deputies to legislative bodies, heads of local administrations of their cities and villages, as well as governors. On March 14 they will elect their president. This is extremely important for all of us, for Russia’s future.
