Russian Foreign Ministry Demands that Lithuania Close Kavkaz-Center
September 14, Russian Foreign Ministry issued a note to Lithuanian Ambassador in Moscow Rimantas Shidlauskas, asking to close the site of Chechen separatists, RIA-Novosti reports.
“The inactivity of the Lithuanian authorities concerning the site at a Lithuanian server will be considered by Moscow as an openly unfriendly step of the Lithuanian authorities, having a negative influence on the atmosphere of our bilateral relations,” the ministry’s press service says.
The site of Kavkaz-Center was supposed to be closed yet in late June 2003, following the decision of the Lithuanian State Security Department, after its spokesman Vitautas Makauskas said the internet-site was propaganda of terrorism.
However, in September 2003, the Lithuanian Journalist Ethics Committee declared that the materials of the site contain no appeals inflaming interethnic and religious dissension, and as a result the site was resumed.
Later, a Vilnyus local court found illegal the activities of State Security Department, but the decision was appealed in the country’s main administrative court.
