Deferral From Service in the Army to Be Cancelled Soon
July 22, Russian Army Command are to speed up the army deferral cancellation due to sharp reduction in the number of conscripts.
As a result of spring campaign, only 9.5% of young call-up age men were drafted, showing the lowest indicator in Russia’s entire history. Though, the plan set by the president has been fulfilled, army lacks 5% of soldiers and sergeants, Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes.
The number of conscripts can soon be doubled through cancellation of deferrals, reported Deputy Chairman of the Duma Defense Committee Nikolay Bezborodov. This information was confirmed by Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov early this week, but he promised the new rules to be introduced no earlier than 2008. Joint Staff and the Duma are preparing a bill, which envisages deferral only for medical reasons, it is expected to be introduced to the parliament this autumn.
